美英的四个阶段是：殖民时期、扩张时期、独立时期、盛行时期。

第一阶段属于殖民时期美国英语（Colonial American English），在十七世纪时期，英国人开始移民北美洲，沿著大西洋海岸定居，由这些移民导入新大陆的英语，就是莎士比亚、米尔顿、班扬时代的英国英语。

第二阶段是从原有十三州殖民地向外扩张的时期（Continental Expansion American English），大约从西元一七九〇年到一八六〇年，适值美国南北战争爆发前夕为止，在此时期移民从英国带来的保守性与忽视传统的开拓边疆之精神相融合。

在语言方面，美国英语又受到德、法、西等外来语的影响，而扩大了字汇的范围，如hamburger, noodle, semester，借自德语；bureau, depot, cache，借自法语；tomato, barbecue, chocolate，借自西班牙语。

到了第三阶段，美国英语开始走向独立时期（Independent Status American English），大约从一八六〇到一八九〇年，拉丁语系与斯拉夫语系的国家开始向美国移民为止。

在这段时期中，美国已有国家文学，有些作家像韦伯斯特、巴特利、惠特曼、马克吐温等，他们都反对英语的说法与用法遵循标准英国英语的规定。

第四阶段是美国国家主义盛行的时期（Nationalist American English），大约从一八九〇到一九二〇年，交通工具、大众传播、科技都随着国家主义同时进展，美国英语也发展其独特的性质。

而这种独特的美国色彩（Americanism）开始介入英国英语，如常用的字talented, reliable, influential, bluff，又如政治上术语caucus, buncombe, graft, platform, carpotba。

美国英语的创造性

1、创造一些原本根本不存在的新词。例如：一种具有刺激性吸引力的人开始被人们称之为pizzazz（/p?'z?z/，时髦派头的人）。早期的殖民者创造的词汇也不少，如bellhop（俱乐部男侍）、debunk（揭露真相）、blurb（说明）、cahoots（共谋）、skyscraper（摩天大楼）。

由于科技的发展，一系列科学理论词汇也相继诞生，例如black hole（黑洞）、cinerama（全景**）、duplication（录像机）、space walk（太空行走）。最近，中国太空人的出现也使美语又有了一个新词taikonaut（太空人），以示区别astronaut（宇航员）。

2、在旧词的基础上，自由地运用词缀，或者运用拼缀法（blending）和逆生法（backformation）来创造新词。

例如：debug（寻找并除去导致错误的原因）、defog（除雾）、defrost（除霜）。smog（烟雾）来自于smoke（烟）和fog（雾），medicare（医疗照顾）是由medical和 care混合而成的，brunch（早午餐）是由breakfast和 lunch的混合体。

美国英语频繁地运用转类法，尤其是从名词转化为动词，例如：to engineer（设计）、to style（命名）、to resurrect（使复活）、to model（当）等。形容词转化为名词也常出现，例如：a depressive（沮丧的人）、a moderate（温和派）、friendlies（友好的人）。
